Dear Friends,
I keep thinking of the back stories to the ancient legend of Minotaur in the Labyrinth and what it took to finally vanquish the monster: a ball of thread and a knife. For years the Minotaur had been devouring the children of Greece in a regular sacrifice. Theseus, equipped with very simple tools, was able to find his way in and then back out of the maze and he ended the tyranny.
There are parallels now to our broken democracy and the sacrifice of our children, water, wildlife, public health and so much more in the labyrinth. We no longer have one person one vote. We no longer have rational decision-making: who sites crude oil pipelines across major drinking water supplies? We no longer have a functional government that is dedicated to the well-being of the people.
The convoluted election we just survived underscores the fragility of democracy as well as the absence of a shared view of the basic role of government.
Over the past year I’ve described a new project of SEHN on the role of government. The project is called the Bold ReThink. We’d love for you to join this effort to fix our democracy and help government work for We the People. Help fight back against the forces that have entrenched the interests of the powerful few over progressive policies that would benefit us all.
Our first event, modeled after the Women’s Congress for Future Generations is the Democracy Summit , Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. EST/6:30 p.m. CST/4:30 p.m. PST
We have a wonderful lineup of inspiring people who will discuss the forces that have been working against our democracy for decades and what we can do to end the distorting influence of the radical right wing on American life and rebuild our government. And of course, there will be wonderful music!
Please RSVP to the first in our series of events and join BOLD ReThink.
